BENTON, Maine — A local man was killed Sunday afternoon in a head-on collision on Unity Road, according to the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.
Joseph Defazio, 35, had apparently been passing other vehicles on a curved, double-yellow portion of Unity Road before striking a vehicle driven by Nathaniel Hall, 35, according to Interim Sheriff Ryan Reardon.
Both vehicles caught fire after the collision but a witness extinguished the fires quickly, Reardon said, and pulled Hall out of the wreckage.
Defazio was declared dead at the scene, according to Reardon. Speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash that remains under investigation.
Hall was transported to an area hospital for injuries not considered life threatening.
