WALES, Maine — A home built 225 years ago was destroyed Friday night by a fast-moving fire.

No one was injured in the blaze. Crews from eight other departments responded to the fire on the Woods Road at the home owned by Brian Johnson, Wales Fire Chief Anthony Siderio said.

Johnson and his wife were awoken in their first-floor bedroom by popping sounds. Johnson got up to check out the sounds and eventually went outside and saw a glow from the second story of the two-and-a-half story home built in 1790, the fire chief said.

He attempted to go up to the second floor of the house but was unable to due to smoke.

When the first fire crew arrived, flames were shooting out of the second-floor windows. The fire was reported shortly before 11:30 p.m.

The family raised pets in pens near the house but were able to keep the animals safe from the fire, he said.

Departments from Sabattus, Lisbon, Litchfield, Leeds, Monmouth, Greene, Turner and Bowdoin also responded to the fire. Crews were on scene for about seven hours.

The homeowners were insured, the chief said.
