CARIBOU, Maine — Only a couple of days after warm temperatures brought April-like weather to early December, northern parts of Maine saw freezing rain and snow.
According to the National Weather Service’s Caribou forecast center, winter weather alerts were expected to remain in effect for northern and western counties through the end of the day Tuesday.
The heaviest of the snow was expected in areas north of Millinocket while portions of Penobscot and Somerset counties were receiving freezing rain, the weather service reported.
A winter weather advisory for Penobscot, Somerset, Aroostook, Piscataquis and northern Washington counties is in effect through 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Northern counties were expected to receive up to 5 inches of accumulating snow.
