RICHMOND, Kentucky — Former Messalonskee High School of Oakland basketball star Nick Mayo continues to rack up the awards early in his college career at Division I Eastern Kentucky University.
The first-team Bangor Daily News All-Maine choice and 2015 Gatorade Maine Player of the year was voted the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week for the fourth time this season, the league office announced.
Mayo averaged 14.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game last week.
The 6-foot-9, 220-pound forward from Belgrade, Maine, poured in 18 points and matched career-highs with six rebounds, three assists and three steals in EKU’s 80-73 win over Florida Atlantic last Tuesday at McBrayer Arena. He scored 11 points and pulled down six boards in the Colonels’ loss at East Tennessee State on Friday.
Mayo shot 53 percent (10-of-19) from the field and 75 percent (3-of-4) from 3-point range during the week. He ranks fourth in the OVC in field goal percentage (59.0).
He is the first Colonel to be named the OVC Freshman of the Week four times in a season since Matt Witt in 2002-03.
Mayo scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds while playing 36 minutes in his team’s most recent outing, EKU’s 84-59 loss at 19th-ranked West Virginia on Monday night.
He made all three of his field-goal attempts and 3 of 4 free-throw tries for the Colonels, who jumped out to an early lead before being blitzed by a 21-0 West Virginia run that broke the game open before intermission.
EKU senior forward Jarelle Reischel missed the game because of back spasms. He had started all 13 games this season and was averaging 19.8 points and 7.9 rebounds a game.
With the loss, the Colonels are now 8-6 on the season with a layoff until a home game next Tuesday against Manhattan.
