PORTLAND, Maine — Two people were hospitalized after a car hit a tree on Cumberland Avenue in Portland Sunday night.

The driver, 47-year-old Esron Sambia, overcorrected and hit a tree near Portland High School, according to Portland police.

Sambia was driving with a learner’s permit and was being instructed by his aunt at the time of the crash, police said. Both were taken to Maine Medical Center with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
