MATTAMISCONTIS TOWNSHIP, Maine — The southbound lanes of Interstate 95 were shut down at Exit 227 near Chester and Lincoln at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday to allow for the removal of a tractor-trailer that went off the highway during Tuesday’s winter storm.
The lanes were reopened about an hour later, according to a Maine Department of Transportation worker who manned the roadblock.
A state police dispatcher said that while the cab and engine of the 18-wheeler was retrieved from the highway on Tuesday, the trailer of the truck rolled into the median during the accident. Wreckers had to close down at least one lane to hoist it back onto the highway, she said.
Traffic seeking to head south on I-95 during the shutdown was routed to Exit 217 in Howland during the interim. Northbound traffic was unimpeded.
