AUGUSTA, Maine — With fresh snow finally ready for snowmobilers, the Maine Warden Service in conjunction with the Maine Snowmobile Association and Brookfield Renewable are teaming up to assure riders stay safe, the warden service announced Thursday.

Operating on unfamiliar bodies of water and thin ice can be dangerous early in the season, and riders should be vigilant near the state’s rivers, ponds and lakes.

Riders should focus on leaving trip plans and let family members know if those plans change to reduce significant search and rescue efforts.

Snowmobilers are also advised to carry a mobile device and call 911 in the event of an emergency.
