Former Olympic boxing gold medalist Howard Davis Jr. died earlier this week after a bout with lung cancer. He was 59.
Davis reportedly was diagnosed with lung cancer last February. The cancer later spread to his liver and he died on Wednesday at his home in Plantation, Florida.
Davis won the lightweight gold medal at the Montreal Olympics in 1976. He also named most outstanding boxer at the event, beating out American teammates Sugar Ray Leonard, Michael Spinks and Leonard Spinks.
Davis’ performance was fueled by the death of his mother three days before the start of the Olympics.
His professional career didn’t match up to his Olympic exploits. Davis went 36-6-1 with 14 knockouts.
