SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — The Bates men’s basketball team scored a season-high 93 points, Malcolm Delpeche grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds and the Bobcats beat Husson University for the second time this season, this time by a score of 93-74, to win the Naismith Classic on Sunday night.
Shawn Strickland and Mike Boornazian earned spots on the All-Tournament Team, with Strickland winning the tournament’s MVP award.
Strickland followed up his game-winning shot on Saturday with 17 points, six rebounds and five assists on Sunday. His 17 points matched Boornazian for the team-high on the evening.
Meanwhile Malcolm Delpeche hauled in a remarkable 17 rebounds, 13 on the defensive glass, surpassing his previous career-high of 16 rebounds in one game.
Senior captains Boornazian and Josh Britten were hot from beyond the arc, combining to make eight of 13 threes.
The Bobcats actually trailed 16-14 midway through the first half before Boornazian buried a three to give them the lead for good with 10:53 to go in the half. A 9-1 run ensued and Bates controlled the remainder of the first half, taking a 10-point lead into halftime.
While Raheem Anderson (game-high 21 points) and Trevon Butler (20 points) did their best to keep Husson (5-4) in it, the Eagles never got closer than to within eight points in the second half of action.
Anderson and Butler were named to the All-Tournament team.
All 12 of Britten’s points came in the second half as Bates tallied 48 points to get to 93 on the night.
On Saturday night, Butler hit a desperation shot from beyond half-court at the buzzer lifting Husson over Springfield in the opening round of the Classic.
Anderson powered Husson University of Bangor with 27 points and six rebounds, while Butler finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Justin Martin contributed 10 points and six rebounds for the Eagles, who led by as many as 14 points in the first half.
Josh Altman led Springfield (3-6) with a game-high 28 points. Josh Downes provided 19 points and Brandon Eckles added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Bates advanced by beating Brandeis 62-59 when Shawn Strickland hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 10 seconds to go in the game.
Strickland finished with 12 points for Bates while Marcus Delpeche added 17 and Boornazian recorded 13 points and nine rebounds.
John Powell scored 14 points to lead Brandeis (5-5).
UMFK, UMPI record wins
At Presque Isle during the Can-Am Tournament on Saturday, the University of Maine-Fort Kent rolled by the University of New Brunswick-St. John 93-58 and then tourney host UM-Presque Isle held off UNB 70-62.
Marquis Glenn paced UMFK with 19 points and six rebounds. Jake Rioux chipped in with 13 points while Konstantinos Koustas and Fletcher Brown each put in 12. Fred Sanchez added 11.
Geoff Lemmon scored 13 to lead UNB.
In the later game, Anthony Chaco scored 23 points to lead UMPI.Maurice Harris chipped in with 12 points and Chase Vicaire had 11.
Steve Ryan led UNB with 16 points.
UMPI, UMFK win
At Presque Isle on Sunday in the Can-Am Tournament, UMaine-Presque Isle used scoring balance to beat UNB 73-43. UMFK also posted an 82-54 win over UNB.
Maurice Harris scored 16 points for the winners while Chase Vicaire and Anthony Chacho each put in 15 and Brandon McGill netted 12.
Jarred Crawford led UNB with nine points.
Jake Rioux paced UMFK with 19 points, Qaadir Ali added 12 and Konstantinos Koustas put in 11.
Ben Tait and Matt Brown each scored 10 for UNB.
Colby 88, UMF 58
At Waterville on Saturday, Ryan Jann scored a game-high 21 points to help Colby College post an 88-58 men’s basketball victory over the University of Maine-Farmington.
Tony Karalekas tallied 16 points for the 9-1 Mules, who have won nine straight games. Sam Willson finished with 12 points.
Sean Murphy led the 0-9 Beavers with 12 points. Ryan Rice added 11 points and six rebounds, while Nick Hilton had 10 points and six boards.
Women’s Basketball
UMFK posts win
At Presque Isle on Saturday in the Can-Am Tournament, the University of Maine-Fort Kent defeated the University of New Brunswick-St. John 86-33 and UNB-St. John came back to beat tourney host UM-Presque Isle 52-43.
Samantha Carapellucci paced UMFK with 24 points and nine rebounds and Ericka Saucier scored 20 points and had 12 rebounds. Romanalyn Inocencio chipped in with 14 points, Ifeoma Okaro had 12 and Danielle Carrillo had 10.
Allyson McLaughlin scored 12 points to lead UNB.
UNB took a 28-19 lead over UMPI in the later game and then held on for the win. Jill Corey paced the winners with 12 points.
Amanda Hotham recorded 15 points and six rebounds to lead UMPI.
UMPI, UMFK record victories
At Presque Isle on Sunday, Kylee Alton hit three throws in the final 36 seconds to help UMaine-Presque Isle hold off UNB St. John for a 50-47 win in the Can Am Tournament.
UMFK also beat UNB 75-31.
Alton finished with 12 points, six rebounds and three assists for the Owls. Amanda Hotham chipped in with a double-double of 14 points and 17 rebounds and Brianna Losee added 13 points.
Megan Baisley paced UNB with 16 points.
Romanalyn Inocencio scored 21 points and had nine assists to lead UMFK. Danielle Carrillo added 21 points while Ericka Saucier had 15 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Samantha Carapellucci chipped in with 12 points and 16 rebounds.
Kelsey Simon scored 11 points to lead UNB.
MMA 61, John Jay 49
At New York on Sunday, Alayne Felix broke Maine Maritime Academy’s single-game record for most field goals made in a game (13) and scored a career-high 29 points to lift Maine Maritime Academy by John Jay.
She also notched her third double-double with 10 rebounds.
Maine Maritime rallied from a two-point halftime deficit, scoring 26 points in the third period to take a 45-33 lead and shot 60 percent from the field in the second half to secure the win..
Tess Clark added nine points and five assists for MMA 95-4) while Terri Chu and Josephine Diaz each scored 11 points to lead John Jay (3-8).
Gordon 53, Thomas 42
At Waterville on Saturday, Sophie Linnell posted a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds to pace Gordon College to victory.
Kristen Smith scored 10 points for the winners, while Mariel Barner provided nine points and four assists.
Katie McAllister led Thomas with a game-best 13 points. Jordan Agger-Barnes added 10 points, while Kelly Macomber scored eight points.
UMass Boston 60, Colby 50
At Boston on Saturday, Olivia Murphy continued a productive season with game highs of 27 points and 13 rebounds to power the Beacons to victory.
UMass Boston (7-4) built a 40-19 lead through three quarters.
Mia Diplock led Colby College of Waterville (16-3) with 13 points, Carylanne Wolfington scored 11, Haley Driscoll netted nine and Desi Smith added eight.
Bowdoin 82, Bates 54
Ar Lewiston on Saturday, Shannon Brady connected for 19 points and blocked three shots as the Polar Bears cruised.
Ally Silfen (7 rebounds) and Lydia Caputi tossed in 12 points each for 8-2 Bowdoin College of Brunswick.
Nina Davenport paced Bates (2-7) with 13 points and eight rebounds and Lyse Henshaw chipped in 10 points.
