UNITY, Maine — Unity College’s interim president took the helm of the small, private college on Monday.

Melik Peter Khoury, who has served as senior vice president of external affairs and later as executive vice president and chief financial officer since joining the school in 2013, is the environmentally focused college’s 11th president.

His initial 30-month appointment was approved by the college’s board of trustees in August.

Khoury takes over for Stephen Mulkey, who announced his retirement in June and left the university at the close of 2015.

Before taking his position at Unity, Khoury worked at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa, where he was senior vice president for strategic positioning. He also has worked at colleges in Missouri and New York, as well as the University of Maine at Fort Kent, where he directed admissions.

He holds a doctorate in business administration from the University of Phoenix, a master’s in business administration from the University of Maine and a bachelor’s in business management from the University of Maine at Fort Kent.
