ATLANTA — A man held his 10 children, their mother and his 17-year-old brother hostage for five hours in a hotel near Atlanta on Tuesday before stabbing himself in the neck as the standoff ended, police said.

The suspect, Korrie Thomas, 36, critically injured himself but his family members, including a 3-month-old baby, were unhurt, DeKalb County Police said in a statement. They offered no motive for the attack.

The incident began just after 2 a.m. when police said they responded to a call about a domestic assault at the hotel in Decatur, Georgia, where they found Thomas holed up in a room with the woman and children.

Armed with a knife, he refused to leave the room or let anyone else out, police said. Law enforcement officers entered the room to rescue the hostages after hours of unsuccessful negotiation with Thomas.

Thomas is not married to the mother of his children, police said. He has been charged with false imprisonment and obstruction, police said.

He was arrested in February 2015 on aggravated assault and armed robbery charges and was out of jail on bond in that case at the time of the incident on Tuesday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
