BELFAST, Maine — Police are urging midcoast-area merchants to be extra careful when accepting cash after three counterfeit bills were caught by Belfast banks in the last month.
The bills — in denominations of $20 or $50 — were passed at local convenience stores and a fast food eatery, according to Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham of the Belfast Police Department. He said Tuesday that the bogus bills look good, but do not have a watermark.
The first counterfeit bill was noticed in early December, but so far it has not been possible to figure out where the money originated. Cunningham said police in southern Maine also are investigating some counterfeit bills that surfaced down there, and that there may be a connection with the midcoast-area money.
