Four area fire departments fought a garage fire on Horsecents Lane in Waldoboro on Tuesday morning.
The Jefferson, Union, and Warren fire departments helped the Waldoboro Fire Department contain and extinguish the fire in a garage and adjoining chicken coop at the residence off Washington Road (Route 220), all while dealing with single-digit temperatures.
According to Waldoboro Assistant Fire Chief William Maxwell, the fire appears to have been started by a heat lamp used in the chicken coop.
Maxwell said there were no injuries as a result of the fire, but it did cause heavy damage in both the coop area and the second level of the garage.
The assistant fire chief said that when firefighters first reached the scene there was heavy smoke coming from the garage and coop.
He said the departments immediately started work to knock the fire down and had the blaze contained in roughly 30-35 minutes.
Maxwell said the fire was extinguished approximately 50 minutes after crews arrived on the scene.
Once the fire was extinguished, crews used fans to help clear smoke out of the building.
Maxwell expressed his appreciation toward neighboring fire departments and said they played an important role in containing the fire in a timely manner.
“This was an excellent response by all the departments today and a really good example of the importance of mutual aid,” Maxwell said.
