BANGOR, Maine — Chandler Guerrette hit a buzzer-beating layup to lift the Husson University Eagles to a 65-64 women’s basketball victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Wednesday night at Newman Gym.
The Eagles inbounded the ball on their half of the court and Guerrette was able to roll off of a screen and drive the center of the lane for the game-winner.
Husson took a 63-60 lead with 21 seconds left in the game when Guerrette hit two free throws. The Huskies responded when Gretchen Anderson made a layup with 14 seconds left and Ella Ramonas added another basket eight seconds later following a Husson turnover before Guerrette’s winning basket.
Kenzie Worcester paced Husson (6-3) with 16 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Guerrette finished with 15 points while Rebecca Young and Victoria McIntyre each chipped in with eight. McIntyre also grabbed eight rebounds.
Anderson recorded 16 points, six rebounds and four steals to lead USM (6-6). Ramonas added 15 points while Megan Pelletier chipped in 13 points and six rebounds.
The game remained tight in the fourth quarter with the lead exchanging hands nine times in the final 10 minutes of action.
Men’s Basketball
Rochester 75, UMFK 51
At Hazleton, Pennsylvania, Rochester College held the University of Maine-Fort Kent to 14 field goals en route to the victory.
Rochester (Mich.), the No. 1 ranked team in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association, earned its second straight win over UMFK. Angelo Griffis sparked the offense with 17 points while Justin Nafso chipped in with 12 points and five assists.
UMFK junior All-American Joe McCloskey was held to 10 points. Jake Rioux led the Bengals with 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Fletcher Brown chipped in with 10 points.
