ETNA, Maine — A home and a barn on the Lakins Road were leveled by fire Thursday evening, according to the town’s fire chief.

The barn, which was attached to the residence, was fully engulfed in flames when Etna firefighters arrived shortly after 5 p.m., according to Chief Shawn Ryder.

By the time crews arrived, the fire had spread to the house and crews had to make a defensive attack until backup could arrive, Ryder said.

A family of six — two adults and four children — were not home at the time of the fire, though a cat and several chickens are unaccounted for, Ryder said. The family’s dogs managed to escape.

A cause has not been determined, but no foul play is suspected in the fire, Ryder said.

Firefighters from Etna, Plymouth, Newport, Levant, Hermon, Carmel, Dixmont and Newburgh responded.
