PORTLAND, Maine — The owners of Saddleback Mountain in Rangeley said last week they are close to selling the resort to an unnamed buyer in a deal that could open the mountain this season.

Resort owners announced on their Facebook page Dec. 18, 2015, one day before its traditional opening day, that they had a deal lined up with an expected closing date of late January.

Last week, owners said the transaction “is still moving forward” and that they just needed to complete paperwork before preparing the resort to restart operations.

The Berry family, which purchased the ski area in 2003, said last summer that they would not reopen for the winter if they could not raise about $3 million to replace a 51-year-old double chairlift.

On Dec. 18, 2015, the resort said it would offer three options to season pass holders: getting a credit 50 percent of the value of the pass for use anywhere at the resort either this season or next year; convert the full season pass to a gift card and get a 50 percent credit; or receive a full refund of the pass.
