EASTPORT, Maine — Hazen McDugald, the man charged with manslaughter in connection with the September death of an Eastport man, has been found guilty of a separate assault on his father.

McDugald, 39, was arrested by Maine State Police on Sept. 17 on two charges of aggravated assault and one charge of violating bail in connection with the death of Maurice “Allen” Harris, whose body was found in his home at 3 Clark St. about 10 p.m. Sept. 10.

The Washington County grand jury then indicted McDugald on Nov. 5 on an additional charge of manslaughter.

The grand jury determined that McDugald “did recklessly or with criminal negligence cause the death of another human being,” according to a criminal docket provided by Timothy Feeley, spokesperson for the Maine attorney general’s office.

A dispositional conference on the manslaughter and related charges is scheduled for Feb. 16, Washington County Court Clerk Pam McPherson said this week. At that conference the defense attorney and prosecutor will discuss the status of the case with the judge before determining how to proceed.

McPherson said McDugald pleaded not guilty Dec. 8 to all charges stemming from Harris’ death.

According to court documents obtained Thursday, McDugald also pleaded guilty on Nov. 18 to domestic violence assault charges in connection with a July 7 assault on his father, Thomas McDugald. Another charge of aggravated assault against Hazen McDugald in that case was dismissed. No details about the assault were included in the documents.

Hazen McDugald was sentenced to 50 days in jail with credit for time served, according to the court records.

He remains incarcerated on the remaining charges at the Washington County Jail in Machias.
