The Bangor area’s solid waste landscape will change in 2018. And this year, 187 towns and cities in northern and central Maine are deciding where they’ll send their trash. Will they choose to continue sending their solid waste to the Penobscot Energy Recovery Co. in Orrington, which incinerates the trash to produce electricity? Or will they choose a new, yet-to-be-built facility in Hampden that would extract recyclables out of unsorted trash, then use the waste’s organic materials to produce biogas for commercial energy users in the area?

The graphic below outlines the choices before the 187 towns that have to make a decision. Click here for a larger version of this infographic.
