BRUNSWICK, Maine — A Brunswick area man was arrested Monday night after allegedly attempting to steal a basket of groceries from the Hannaford supermarket and then fleeing from police.
Haven J. Willis, 41, whose address was unlisted but who police say is from the area, was charged with refusal to submit to arrest, Class C felony theft and violation of conditions of release because he was on bail from a previous arrest, Brunswick police Cmdr. Mark Waltz said.
Police went to Hannaford Supermarket at approximately 7:45 p.m. after security reported they were following a man around the store.
Officers encountered Willis leaving the store with a basket full of unbagged items including corned beef hash, baked beans, Johnny Walker Red whiskey, sunglasses and apples, Waltz said. After a brief chase, he was tackled nearby on Elm Street and arrested.
Willis was taken to Cumberland County Jail. His bail amount was not immediately available. He is scheduled to appear in Cumberland County Unified Criminal Court on March 15.
