A listeria outbreak linked to Dole salad packages has killed at least one person and sicked 12 others, spurring an investigation by federal officials and prompting a nationwide recall.

The U.S. Centers for Disease for Control is investigating the outbreak. Cases have been reported in Michigan, New York, Massachusetts and at least three other states.

The salad was sold under various brand names, including Dole, Fresh Selections, Simple Truth and President’s Choice.

The CDC has recommended that people not eat packaged salads produced at Dole’s Springfield, Ohio, plant. These packages can be identified by the letter “A” at the beginning of the manufacturing code, the CDC said.

“At this time, there is no evidence to suggest that packaged salads produced at other Dole processing facilities in the United States are linked to illness,” the CDC said on its website.

Dole has temporarily suspended production at its Springfield plant, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches and intestinal complications, according to the CDC. Pregnant women, older people, and those with compromised immune systems are particularly at risk.
