WOOLWICH, Maine — A 22-year-old Virginia man was arrested Friday evening after allegedly attempting to stab another man with whom he was staying in Woolwich.

Michael Marcotte, whose last known address was in Hampton, Virginia, was charged with aggravated reckless conduct, a Class B felony, according to Chief Deputy Brett Strout of the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office.

Marcotte reportedly came to Maine three weeks ago after meeting the alleged victim online, according to Strout.

On Friday evening, Marcotte allegedly attempted to stab the 44-year-old man with a “large” knife at the man’s home. The incident remains under investigation, Strout said.

“The victim was able to protect himself,” Strout said, although Marcotte suffered significant cuts to his hand, which required surgery.

Sheriff’s deputies and a Northeast Ambulance crew went to the home just after 7 p.m. and took Marcotte first to Maine Medical Center, then to Mid Coast Hospital and finally to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset, where he remains without bail pending a March 15 appearance in West Bath District Court.
