STONY BROOK, New York — The Stony Brook Seawolves jumped out to an early lead and never trailed in the game to earn an 81-54 men’s basketball victory over the the University of Maine Black Bears in America East action Monday night at the Island Federal Credit Union Arena.
The league-leading Seawolves extended their winning streak to 12, the third longest streak this season in Division I.
The Seawolves dominated the Black Bears in all facets of the game, holding Maine to a 33.3 percent shooting effort (18 of 54) from the field. The Seawolves hit 60.8 percent of their shots (31 of 51) from the field, including 10 of 14 (71.4 percent) from 3-point land.
Stony Brook also outrebounded UMaine 41-22 and had 22 assists on their field goals while UMaine had just seven.
The Seawolves improved to 16-4 overall and 7-0 in America East, and the Black Bears slipped to 6-13 and 2-4, respectively.The game was originally scheduled for Sunday, but it got pushed back a day because of the snowstorm that hit the area.
Guard Carson Puriefoy sparked the Seawolves with 23 points, highlighted by a 6-of-6 effort from the line and 5 of 8 from beyond the arc. Forward Rayshaun McGrew chipped in with 14 points, and forward Jameel Warney contributed 12 points and 12 rebounds. Guard Lucas Woodhouse added 12 points.
Forward Devin Eke was the only UMaine player to hit double-digit scoring, finishing with 11 points. Forward Till Gloger added eight points, all in the first half, and forward Issac Vann and guard Shawn Lawton each added seven points.
Stony Brook set the early tone for the game, jumping out out an 11-2 lead in the first 3 minutes, 21 seconds. The Seawolves controlled the inside game and held the Black Bears to 11 of 32 field goals (34.4 percent) to take a 41-27 lead at halftime.
Puriefoy paced the Seawolves in the first half with 13 points, and McGrew added eight. Warney grabbed seven rebounds.
Gloger kept the Black Bears within striking distance with eight points and four rebounds in the first half. Guard Aaron Calixte added five points.
