ROCKLAND, Maine — A 20-year-old woman who is eight months pregnant was sentenced Friday to nine months in jail for her role in an assault that nearly killed a man.
Amber St. Pierre was sentenced by Justice Daniel Billings in Knox County Unified Court to three years in jail with all but nine months suspended for aggravated assault. St. Pierre also will be on probation for two years upon her release.
The judge agreed to allow St. Pierre to begin the jail sentence on April 29 so that she can deliver and spend some time with her baby.
St. Pierre and Dalton Cross were arrested in November 2014 after an incident in Warren in which the two kicked the victim as he was on the ground. Knox County Sheriff’s Office Deputy John Hansen was one of the first officers to respond and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation to revive the 60-year-old man who had been assaulted.
The man recovered.
St. Pierre and Cross, 22, had agreed to plead guilty in January 2015 with the stipulation they would have to undergo counseling for anger management. The agreement called for St. Pierre to serve no more than four months in jail if she met the terms of the agreement with the district attorney’s office.
Assistant District Attorney Christopher Fernald told Justice Billings on Friday, however, that St. Pierre had failed to get the required counseling.
Defense attorney Scott Hess agreed that St. Pierre had failed to meet that obligation but pointed out that she was homeless and was trying on a day-to-day basis to find a place to live.
Cross also had been scheduled to be sentenced Friday but his case was postponed because there was a disagreement over whether he had met the terms of his agreement, Fernald said.
