Browns plan to part with Manziel
The Cleveland Browns will waive quarterback Johnny Manziel when the league year opens March 9 for repeated transgressions that have hurt and embarrassed the team, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported Tuesday afternoon.
Earlier in the day, new executive vice president of football operations Sashi Brown indicated the team had grown weary of Manziel’s antics — a clear signal that Manziel’s football future did not include being a member of the Cleveland Browns.
Brown might not have any further comment to the media, but a league source told the Plain Dealer, Manziel had played his last football game as a member of the Browns.
Cleveland can’t waive or trade Manziel until the league year begins March 9 because they’ve already exercised the option of moving their salary cap space from this year into next year, the newspaper reported. Therefore, they don’t have the option of waiving him when the waiver period opens Feb. 8, a day after the Super Bowl 50.
On Saturday, police investigated an alleged assault that involved Manziel in Fort Worth, Texas. Fort Worth and Dallas police are working together to determine whether any criminal offenses occurred, and NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told ESPN that the league was aware and was “looking into it.”
Twins sign outfielder Quentin
The Minnesota Twins on Tuesday signed veteran outfielder Carlos Quentin to a minor-league contract.
Quentin, 33, played in just five games with Seattle’s Triple-A Tacoma team in 2015.
The Mariners signed him after he was released by the Atlanta Braves. Quentin offers the Twins depth on the outfield corners and would make $750,000 if he earns a spot on the team, according to reports.
Multiple knee injuries have plagued the former first-round draft pick out of Stanford. In 2008 with the Chicago White Sox, Quentin hit 36 home runs and drove in 100 runs. He has 154 homers in a career that has included stops with Arizona and San Diego.
Dodgers add Maddux, Ibanez to front office staff
Hall of Fame pitcher Greg Maddux and Paul Ibanez will join the Los Angeles Dodgers as special assistants to the president of baseball operations and the baseball operations department.
The Dodgers announced Tuesday that Maddux and Ibanez will work under Andrew Friedman, who is president of baseball operations.
Maddux, 49, has front-office experience with the Chicago Cubs in 2010 as assistant to general manager Jim Hendry and with the Texas Rangers from 2012 to 2015 as a special assistant to general manager Jon Daniels.
Ibanez, 43, spent the 2015 season working as a television analyst for Fox Sports after his 19-year career in the major leagues.
