ORONO, Maine — There are three candidates running for two seats on the Orono Town Council, including one incumbent, and two newcomers are running for one school board seat, Town Clerk Shelly Crosby said Wednesday.

Incumbent Councilor Thomas L. Spitz is running against residents Daniel R. LaPointe and Clint Relyea in the March 8 local election.

Frances M. Newbauer and Michelle K. Smith are running for the RSU 26 board seat of Megan Sanders, who decided not to run.

After the election, the Town Council will be tasked with selecting someone to fill the seat of Shari Kinnison, who resigned from the school board and has one year remaining on her term, Crosby said.

Residents also will vote in a thumbs up or thumbs down local RSU 26 referendum asking if they want newly elected school board members to be sworn in at the first meeting after the election and be allowed to vote at that meeting.

The polls will be open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day.
