NEWPORT, Maine — A reported fight behind Key Bank on Main Street on Tuesday led to multiple charges for a Pittsfield man, according to police.

At the time the reported fight was called in, police also were advised about a theft from nearby Shop ’n Save, according to Newport police Chief Leonard Macdaid.

The manager of the supermarket was chasing Joseph Meservey, 20, who had fled from the store when confronted after allegedly stealing razor blades. A concerned citizen called 911 and reported a fight after observing the manager chase Meservey out of the store.

Macdaid said the man who called police managed to tackle Meservey, but he briefly got away before police found him at Gilmans Trailer Park. He also had the prescription drug gabapentin, which wasn’t prescribed to him, the chief added.

Meservey was arrested and charged with possession of a Schedule Z drug, possession of drug paraphernalia and theft, all Class E offenses, and brought to Penobscot County Jail.
