CARIBOU, Maine — Spring-like weather has yielded to winter-like conditions throughout Maine.

Much of the state woke up Friday morning to find fresh snow on vehicles and driveways. The inclement weather was expected to continue throughout the day. By late afternoon, the heavy snow and wind had knocked out power to 1,400 Emera Maine customers, most in Hancock County.

According to the National Weather Service, the coast was expected to get hit the hardest, with up to 10 inches expected in coastal Washington and Hancock counties.

A winter storm warning has been posted for those areas and will remain in effect until 7 p.m. Friday.

Much of the rest of the state is under a winter weather advisory as well, according to the weather service.

Up to 6 inches of snow was predicted for Penobscot, southeast Aroostook and southern Piscataquis counties, while southern Penobscot county could receive up to 8 inches.

Far southern and central regions were expected to get anywhere from 4 to 6 inches of snow.

Maine State Police reported early Friday the speed limit on the Maine Turnpike has been decreased to 45 mph. Driving conditions have been hazardous throughout the day, with numerous accidents reported.

The Portland International Jetport reported a handful of canceled flights, while Bangor International Airport reported two departures were running behind schedule, with the University of Maine women’s basketball team among those delayed.

The Black Bears were heading to Baltimore for Saturday’s America East game against University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Portland announced a citywide parking ban starting at 10 p.m. Friday so that crews can clear the streets. The ban lasts until 6 a.m. Saturday. Bangor also has a parking ban in effect starting at 11 p.m. Friday lasting into 6 a.m. Saturday.
