WARREN, Maine — No criminal charges are expected to be filed against a Maine man as a result of a fatal hunting accident in Texas on Saturday, according to an investigator from that state.

Former Connecticut State Trooper Stephen Davis died as a result of a single gunshot wound to the left side of his torso from a Winchester lever-action rifle fired by one of his hunting companions, Alvin Chase of Warren, according to Robert Sifuentes of the Maverick County Sheriff’s Office in Texas.

Chase and Davis were among a party of six or seven who were hunting for wild hogs in brush-covered land on the Cinco Ranch in El Indio, Texas, on Saturday evening, according to Sifuentes.

Chase told police that he shot at a wild hog and accidentally hit Davis.

Sifuentes told a reporter with The Hartford (Connecticut) Courant on Wednesday that Davis and Chase had become separated during the hunt, with Chase staying on a dirt road and Davis walking into the thick brush.

At one point, with a group of wild hogs heading toward him in the brush, Davis started walking back toward the road and came upon a fence, Sifuentes told the Courant.

Davis then got on his hands and knees to crawl through a gap in the fence, the investigator said.

“The hog happened to cross the fence line, right next to where Mr. Davis was,” Sifuentes told the Connecticut paper. “I guess that’s when Mr. Chase had his weapon up.”

Chase was “devastated,” the investigator told The Hartford Courant. “His eyes were red from crying.”

Sifuentes did not have an age for Chase but said he was an elderly man. A woman who answered the phone at the home of Alvin Chase Sr. in Warren on Wednesday said the family would have no comment.

Sifuentes told the Bangor Daily News that while the investigation continues, the medical examiner has ruled the death an accident.

The Texas rangers, the state police organization for Texas, were assisting in the investigation.

Maverick County is southwest of San Antonio and adjacent to the Mexican border.
