BATH, Maine — Police have identified the 70-year-old woman who died Wednesday after being struck by a sport utility vehicle outside Bath Iron Works as Paula Caruso of Wiscasset.

Caruso died after being struck by a 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by 57-year-old Edward Buzzell of Bath, according to Bath police Lt. Robert Savary. She was struck as she crossed Washington Street in a crosswalk while heading to work at Bath Iron Works, police said.

Police arrived shortly 6 a.m. Wednesday to find Caruso unresponsive and lying on the street. Officers performed CPR until Bath paramedics arrived and took over, but Caruso died at the scene, Savary said.

She had been a shipyard employee for less than a year, police said. Buzzell also works at BIW.

No charges have been filed, and police continue to investigate the incident.
