BAR HARBOR, Maine — A local woman has died after a fire broke out Wednesday afternoon at her home in the downtown village, according to officials.

Melissa Watership, 46, died at Mount Desert Island Hospital after responding firefighters found her in the kitchen of her home at 9 Center St., Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland said in a news release issued late Wednesday night.

Watership’s home is next to the hospital.

McCausland said Watership lived in the home with her husband, who was at work at the time of the fire. Investigators with the State Fire Marshal’s Office are trying to determine how the fire started, he said.

Watership was a veterinarian who worked at Acadia Veterinary Hospital, also located in downtown Bar Harbor.

According to a report by the Mount Desert Islander weekly newspaper, the blaze filled the house with smoke late Wednesday afternoon. A pet dog also is believed to have died in the fire, the newspaper reported.
