BUCKSPORT, Maine — A Waltham woman accused of stealing money from her employer while working for the local Family Dollar store has been charged with felony and misdemeanor theft charges, according to police.

Michelle Chaloult, 47, allegedly stole more than $15,000 from the store in April 2015, Sgt. David Winchester of the Bucksport Police Department said Wednesday. He declined to say what position Chaloult held at the store when the alleged theft took place.

The alleged crime was reported to the local police department the following month by a district manager for the retail business, Winchester said.

As a result of the investigation, Chaloult was charged this past week with two counts of theft, one Class B and the other Class D, he said. Class B felonies carry a maximum possible penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $20,000 while Class D misdemeanors are punishable by a maximum possible penalty of 364 days in jail and a fine of $2,000.

Chaloult is due to appear in court in Ellsworth on March 22, according to Winchester.
