PORTLAND, Maine — A Florida man pleaded guilty Thursday in U.S. District Court to stalking a Maine woman with whom he had a previous relationship, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.

Charles Mack, 51, of Clearwater, Florida, has been held without bail since his arrest in that city on May 15, 2015.

Mack and the victim were a couple in 1989 and involved in criminal activity together that included check fraud and theft, according to the prosecution version of events to which Mack pleaded guilty. Both were convicted of federal crimes in 1990 and the couple split up.

The victim did not hear from Mack again until early 2014, when he left a message on her cellphone asking her to call him, the court document said. They resumed communication for a time but after she refused to visit Florida, Mack threatened to send nude photos of her and information about her criminal history to people at her workplace.

In June 2014, Mack began sending threatening text and email messages and leaving threatening voice messages for her, the prosecution version of events said. Despite the victim’s request that he stop calling and emailing her, Mack continued to do so through May 2015, even after FBI agents visited his home and told him to stop.

“Mack’s conduct caused the victim substantial emotional distress,” the U.S. attorney’s office said in a press release issued Thursday.

A sentencing date has not been set.

Mack faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
