CHELSEA, Maine — A Gardiner man has been arrested in connection with stealing construction equipment from his employer, according to state police.

Edward Robinson, 34, is alleged to have sold the equipment to purchase drugs, according to Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.

Robinson was being held at the Kennebec County Jail on unrelated charges when he was charged by state police Wednesday, McCausland said.

Troopers believe Robinson stole staging from a home under construction in Chelsea and sold the equipment to buy heroin, McCausland said.

Robinson had been employed by Pepin Properties of Augusta. The staging was valued at $3,500, and the theft was reported Dec. 28. McCausland said the staging was recovered from a Gardiner business earlier this week.

Robinson allegedly took the staging after work hours had ended, according to McCausland. Robinson is charged with burglary and theft.
