PORTLAND, Maine — The search continues for a Maine Maritime Academy student who was last seen in Orono on Feb. 26.

A vigil for David Breunig, 21, of Westbrook will be held Friday night at Portland’s Western Prom by his employers. They want to bring everyone together so people can support each other, grieve together and share memories.

Search efforts over the last week have focused on the Penobscot and Stillwater rivers near the area he was last seen.

Investigators said Breunig left a party in Orono on Friday night to meet up with friends at a bar.

Police said the quickest way to walk where he was heading was by going over a train trestle that crosses the Stillwater River, which is raging during this time of year. The Stillwater River eventually joins the Penobscot River.

Officials suspect he ended up in the water. What was an active search is now considered a recovery effort to try and find his body. Searchers used aircraft Thursday to scan the area.

Friday’s vigil is expected to start around 6:30 p.m. Organizers said if you plan to stop by, please bring a candle or flashlight.
