ROCKLAND, Maine — Nomination papers will be available next week for candidates who want to fill a vacancy on the City Council created by Monday’s resignation of William Jillson.
Candidates can pick up papers at the city clerk’s office beginning Wednesday, March 16. The deadline for candidates to file the papers with the clerk with at least 100 signatures of registered voters is May 2.
The election will be June 14.
The person elected will serve what remains of the three-year term Jillson won in November when he unseated incumbent Mayor Frank Isganitis by a vote of 528-476.
This is only the third time in city history that a sitting councilor has resigned. The last councilor to resign was James Thompson, who quit in February 2008, three months into his first term. He cited an inability to get along with other councilors for his decision.
In 1981, Gary Fowlie stepped down after he was elected to the Maine House of Representatives.
