PORTLAND, Maine — Specialty pharmacy Apothecary By Design has purchased Healy Pharmacy in Illinois, expanding the Portland-based company’s reach into the Midwest.

The purchase is the first expansion outside Maine for the firm that sold a majority stake to New York investors in the fall and split off its retail pharmacy in early February, selling it to a group of local partners including two employees.

Terms of the sale, closed March 4, were not disclosed.

Apothecary announced Tuesday that it purchased the Warrenville, Illinois, business Healy Pharmacy, which also specializes in infertility treatment and has expertise in oncology and treatments for infectious and inflammatory diseases, according to Mark McAuliffe.

McAuliffe said in a news release that the companies have very little geographic overlap.

When it sold a majority stake to the New York-based BelHealth Investment Partners, company officials said the investment would help fund its expansion across the country.

Apothecary said the Illinois pharmacy’s staff and leadership would keep their positions in the acquisition.
