BELMONT, Maine — A Montville man is in jail after allegedly hitting another man in the head Wednesday afternoon with a small club, according to the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.
Matthew McIntire, 37, was arrested after police investigated multiple calls to 911 at about 3:20 p.m. concerning an ongoing assault at a business on Route 3, according to a press release issued Thursday morning by Sheriff Jeff Trafton. The release did not name the business.
When police deputies arrived at the scene, they spoke with a 52-year-old man, who told them he had gotten into an argument with McIntire. The victim and witnesses told police that McIntire hit the man on the head with an object that looked like a small club, Trafton said. The victim suffered a laceration, according to the sheriff.
McIntire had left the scene by the time officers arrived, but Deputy Greg Jones found him at his home in Montville. Jones interviewed McIntire and then arrested and charged him with Class B aggravated assault and Class E disorderly conduct. The more serious assault charge carries a maximum possible penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000.
McIntire was taken to the Waldo County Correctional Center in Belfast, where he was being held without bail on Thursday morning pending his initial court appearance, according to the sheriff’s office.
