AUBURNDALE, Florida — The Montclair State (N.J.) Red Hawks surged to a seven-run lead and then held off the Husson University Eagles 7-6 in baseball action Thursday at Lake Myrtle Park.
Montclair improved to 4-5 and Husson of Bangor slipped to 2-4 after the Eagles swept WPI on Wednesday to give head coach Jason Harvey his 200th career victory.
Harvey became the second head baseball coach at Husson to achieve 200 wins. John Kolasinski was the first coach to reach the milestone while coaching the Eagles from 1989 to 2003 and compiling a record of 284-262-1.
On Thursday, John Tedesco hit an RBI single in Montclair’s three-run second inning when it scored two unearned runs and the Red Hawks followed with a four-run third highlighted by an RBI triple by Dan Lampasona. Keith Murphy added an RBI double and Jacob Reeder had a run-producing single.
J.T. Whitten put the Eagles on the board with an RBI single in the eighth the Eagles rallied for five runs in the top of the ninth when Julien Boone smacked a three-run home run and Dan Whitney added an RBI single.
Joe Skoczylas pitched four strong innings of relief for the Eagles, scattering three hits while walking just one and striking out six.
Softball
Coe 8, Husson 0
At Kissimmee, Florida, Alyssa Olson held the Eagles to three hits to earn the win for Coe, which improved to 10-2.
Olson struck out nine and walked two.
Mallory McArtor sparked Coe with a triple, single and RBI. Haley Jones also had two hits.
Lyndsay Merrill, Casey Lpes and Olivia Smith each singled for the Eagles, who dipped to 1-7.
Men’s Lacrosse
Wheelock 8, Thomas 3
At Waterville, Eddie Romero recorded five goals and an assist to power Wheelock by the Terriers.
Luiz Fontenelle chipped in with two goals for Wheelock (2-2) and Noah Horning added one.
Colby Blondin paced Thomas (0-1) with a goal and assist while Parker Chute and Zac Crimmen each added a goal.
Connor Lamberton made 14 saves for Thomas and Horning had three for Wheelock.
Men’s Basketball
Arizona 82, Colorado 78
LAS VEGAS — Allonzo Trier scored 23 points, Ryan Anderson had 17 and No. 15 Arizona’s big first half was just enough to keep Colorado at bay en route to an 82-78 victory in the Pac-12 Tournament quarterfinals on Thursday.
The game looked like a laugher early in the second half — Arizona up by 20 — but Colorado rallied almost all the way back, mostly thanks to a relentless effort on the glass that netted 25 offensive rebounds against the Pac-12’s top rebounding team.
Colorado guard Josh Fortune hit a 3-pointer after an offensive rebound to make it 78-74, but Arizona guard Gabe York responded with two free throws with 19.3 seconds left.
York later missed a pair and guard Georgie King gave the Buffaloes a last gasp with a 3-pointer with two seconds left to make it 80-78. York then put the game away with two free throws.
Arizona can point to its free-throw shooting as a key reason for the win. The Wildcats were 30 of 38 in the second half.
Arizona (25-7) advances to meet top-seeded Oregon in a semifinal game on Friday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, which has always featured a partisan and vocal Arizona crowd since the tournament moved to Las Vegas in 2013.
The Ducks won the only regular-season meeting on Jan. 28 in Tucson, ending Arizona’s 49-game home winning streak, which was the longest in the country.
Colorado (22-11) is expected to land an NCAA Tournament at-large bid.
