FORT KENT — The Fort Kent Outdoor Center together with the US Biathlon Association will host the U.S. Biathlon and North American Biathlon Championships March 24-26, in Fort Kent. The event will include classes that will allow World Class Olympic athletes from the U.S. to compete against with the very best athletes from Canada, will give skiers as young as 13-14 years old an opportunity for some of their first competitions; and give Master skiers an opportunity to test their skills in skiing the same courses as the very best skiers that North America has to offer.The competition schedule is as follows: Official training, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, March 23; Zero, 1 p.m., and Sprint competition at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 24; Zero, 9 a.m., and Pursuit competition, 10 a.m. Friday, March 25; Zero, 8 a.m., and Mass Start competition, 9 a.m. Saturday, March 26. WATERVILLE, Maine — Registration is open for Thomas College’s second annual Dirty Dog Mud Run, which will take place on April 17 on the campus. With 5K of mud, tire flips, wall climbing, cargo net climbing, and more mud, this event should prove to be fun for all with the focus on finishing. The run starts at 9 a.m. A kids’ obstacle course will take place at 11 a.m. Registration is $15 for alumni, $5 for children and $30 for community members until Feb. 1, then it will be $40. PORTLAND — The American Heart Association’s inaugural HeartStrong 10K will take place Sunday, April 3, in Portland. The event’s fundraising goal is $20,000 to benefit American Heart Association in Maine. Registration and bib pick up begins at 7:30 a.m. at Ocean Gateway Terminal located at 14 Maine State Pier in Portland. Channel 8 WMTW Anchor Tracy Sabol will welcome the crowd before the race begins at 9 a.m. Packet pickup will take place 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at Fleet Feet Sports located at 309 Marginal Way in Portland. In addition, $250 cash prizes will be awarded to the first male and first female finisher and additional prizes will be awarded to the second and third runner up for each gender. BANGOR — The third annual Husson University Donut Run to raise money for the Husson track and field team to travel to South Carolina for its opening meet, will be held Sunday, April 10, at Newman gymnasium, Husson University. Two races will be offered: The Munchkin Mile for children 13 and under who will race 1 mile (9 a.m.) and receive Munchkins at the end, and the 2-mile Donut Run (9:30 a.m.) where racers run a mile, eat two donuts, and then run another mile. Race fee is $10. Race-day registration begins at 7:30 a.m. Race fee is $10, high school and college students registered by Friday, April 8, $15 day of the race; $15 community members if registered by April 8, $20 day of the race. UNITY — Central Maine Striders Inc. and Unity College have announced the 34th annual Unity College Spring 5K to be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 16, on the college campus. Race-walkers start at 9:15 a.m. This is one of the fastest, flattest, 3.1-mile races in the state. Edie Dubord holds the course record for women (16.25), while Peter Lessard (14.29) still sets the standard for men. The race averages approximately 80 runners per year. Entry fee is $10, pre-registration due by April 8. ORONO — The second annual Black Bear Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K will take place on June 5, on the University of Maine campus. Starts on the Beckett track with a run through the campus, along the river and through Orono and Old Town. ORONO — The Maine Association of USA Track & Field will conduct a free track and field officials clinic on Sunday, April 3, in the Orono Council Chambers, Town Office Building, 59 Main St. Registration begins at 11:15 a.m. and the clinic will be noon-4 p.m. The clinic is for anyone interested in officiating track and field at the youth, high school, or college level and/or becoming certified or recertified. Don Berry, master official in the sport and the certification chair for Maine USATF, will conduct the clinic, which is designed to provide both beginning and advanced levels of instruction and cover all aspects of track and field officiating and rules review. Track coaches and track parents who want to learn more about the rules are encouraged to attend the clinic. ORONO — Registration is open for the second annual Junior Bears Triathlon June 4 on the University of Maine campus.The Junior Bears Triathlon is a fundraiser for Black Bear Aquatics, a competition-based swim team located at UMaine’s Wallace Pool. The triathlon is open to children 6-14 years old. Athletes will swim in the Wallace Pool and bike and run on closed roads and paths. Participants who are 6-9 years old will swim 50 yards, bike one mile and run half a mile. Those who are 10-14 years old will cover twice the distance with a 100-yard swim, 2.3-mile bike ride and mile run.
