AUBURN, Maine — A 2-1/2 story home on North Auburn Road was destroyed by a fire that began around noon on Sunday, Battalion Chief Scott Hunter of the Auburn Fire Department said.
Hunter said no one was home when the fire at 256 North Auburn Road began. He said that Don and Terry Lebel, who reside there, were doing errands at the time and that a relative who was visiting returned from a walk to find the house on fire.
The cause of the fire, which began at the rear of the house, remained unknown late Sunday afternoon and that an investigator from the state fire marshal’s office is expected to visit the scene Monday.
No one was injured as a result of the fire but some of the Lebels’ cats were missing.
Hunter said that the house, which is owned by Heidi and Dan Lachapelle, was insured.
Auburn firefighters were assisted by their counterparts from several surrounding communities, he said. Their efforts to extinguish the fire initially were hampered by difficulty accessing water, he said.
