WISCASSET, Maine — A Boothbay man has been sentenced to five years and one day in prison after pleading guilty to charges in connection with mailing heroin to drug dealers in Lincoln County while he was living in California.

Casey Kleykamp, 29, pleaded guilty to class A aggravated trafficking of scheduled drugs and class C illegal importation of scheduled drugs, both felonies, during a hearing at the Lincoln County Courthouse in Wiscasset the morning of Monday, March 14.

He also pleaded guilty to class D assault and three counts of class E violation of condition of release, all misdemeanors.

Kleykamp was sentenced to 10 years in prison with all but five years and one day suspended, plus three years of probation, on the felony charges.

Brunswick attorney Andrew Wright represented Kleykamp.

Wright said his client made the “irregular” decision to seek a sentence one day longer than the prosecution’s recommendation of five years in the hopes of serving his term at the Maine State Prison in Warren.

“Mr. Kleykamp and I have spoken of this and he understands the difference, he also understands the (Maine Department of Corrections) will send him where they wish, but we believe that with five years and a day he has a better chance of going to Warren, which is where he would like to end up,” Wright said.

Kleykamp was arrested Aug. 3, 2014 after an extensive investigation by the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.

According to the the assistant attorney general representing the prosecution, Kleykamp was the supplier for Nathan E. Brewer and Allina M. Diaz, both of whom have been convicted of trafficking heroin in Lincoln County.

The assistant attorney general said the investigation revealed that Kleykamp was wired $27,168 between March 3 and July 28, 2014 in return for 21 packages sent under aliases via FedEx, UPS, and the U.S. Postal Service to Maine.

On July 31, 2014, during a sting operation and with the help of a drug K-9, agents seized a package later confirmed to contain 8.9 grams of heroin.

The assistant attorney general said video surveillance was obtained from postal inspectors in California showing Kleykamp placing the heroin into a sunglasses case, which was then put into a post office box and shipped to the Midcoast.

Kleykamp was arrested and extradited to Lincoln County.

The assault charge stemmed from an incident at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset, where Kleykamp assaulted Stacy Parker, a Texas man who was later convicted of committing a sex crime against a child in Westport Island in 2010.

Kleykamp’s request for a stay of a few days was denied by the court. Raimondi said she sympathized with Kleykamp’s desire to put his affairs in order and send financial assistance to his mother, who is in poor health, in California, but could not agree to a stay given Kleykamp’s recent history of violating bail conditions.

Lincoln County sheriff’s deputies arrested Kleykamp Jan. 30 and again March 1 for bail violations.
