CANAAN, Maine — A local man has been charged with arson in connection with a fire that gutted a mobile home last fall, according to the state fire marshal’s office.
Matthew Short, 30, is also accused of burglary and aggravated cruelty to animals, according to a statement from the fire marshal’s office.
Short’s girlfriend, Sheena Moshier, 30, was arrested on unrelated charges of forgery and negotiating a worthless instrument, the statement said.
The Sept. 21 fire destroyed a mobile home near Short’s residence. Nobody was home at the time, but four dogs and three cats died. The fire was discovered by residents upon them returning home.
Short was taken to the Somerset County Jail where bail was set at $50,000.
