WASHINGTON, Maine — Two people died Friday afternoon in a crash involving a tractor-trailer and at least one car, according to Knox County Sheriff Donna Dennison.

The possible multiple-vehicle crash occurred at the intersection of Route 17 and Fitch Road. Both roads are closed near the intersection, according to the Knox County Regional Dispatch Center.

Motorists were trapped in vehicles, and at least one car was on fire, Dennison said about 5 p.m. Friday.

Members of the Somerville and Jefferson fire departments were at the crash assisting the Washington fire departments, the sheriff said.

Ambulance crews from Union, Waldoboro and Sterling also were called to the scene.
