WASHBURN, Maine — Six Aroostook County communities have access to faster wireless communication service now that U.S. Cellular has added 4G LTE to an existing tower in Washburn, company officials announced on Monday.
The 4G upgrade will provide access to faster Web browsing, video streaming, and Internet access to the towns of Washburn, Wade, Woodland, Mapleton, Castle Hill and Perham.
The upgrade was made Friday, March 25.
Matt Kasper, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in New England, said in a written statement Monday that the company has always focused on providing the best wireless experience for its customers in Aroostook County “through a high-quality network with national coverage along with the latest 4G LTE devices.” LTE stands for long-term evolution.
He said that the company would continue to invest in its network so that phones would work whether a customer was in their “backyard or across the country.”
4G LTE speeds provide an enhanced wireless experience with fast Web browsing, smooth video streaming, video chatting and high-speed downloads.
U.S. Cellular is the fifth-largest full-service wireless carrier in the United States, according to the statement.
The Chicago-based carrier said 99 percent of customers nationally have access to 4G LTE speeds.
