ELLSWORTH, Maine — Police are investigating a burglary that occurred last weekend at a pet store.

A safe containing several hundred dollars was taken late Saturday night, March 26, from Maine Pet & Aquarium on Route 1, according to the Ellsworth Police Department.

Detective Dotty Small said Wednesday that the burglar gained entry to the store by prying open the exterior back door.

A surveillance video of the burglary released by police shows someone wearing gloves and some type of cloth over his or her head and face stealthily walk up behind the counter inside the pet store and rummage around behind it. The person then appears to try to pry open the cash register, which is hidden from view behind the counter, and then picks up a box and walks away.

The safe was in the box, according to Small. The video clip is a little more than one minute long.

Anyone with information that may be related to the burglary can call the Ellsworth Police Department at 667-2133.
