ROCKPORT, Maine — A motel that has been in the same family since 1963 has been sold.
The Ledges by the Bay was purchased on March 29 by Central Hospitality Inc., according to paperwork filed in the Knox County Registry of Deeds. The deed transfer lists Amit Patel of Somerset, New Jersey, as a contact for the new owner.
The Ledges is a 41-unit motel located on Route 1 in the Glen Cove section of Rockport. The property consists of slightly more than 9 acres with 900 feet of ocean frontage.
No sale price was disclosed but the town has the property assessed at nearly $2.9 million.
The Ledges was purchased in 1963 by Robert and Edith Beale. The couple ran the motel for nearly 50 years. Robert died in 2005 and Edith in 2009 at the age of 78. Their sons Mark and Howard took ownership after their parents died.
In Edith Beale’s obituary, she was called “a local institution as an innkeeper.”
The German-born woman “learned to speak English rather quickly by simply conversing with her guests out of necessity in order to run the business. Many people were well served by her kindness and generosity over the years as a local business owner,” the obituary stated.
Email messages were left with Mark Beale and the new company that acquire the Ledges but they were not immediately returned.
