FREEPORT, Maine — Regional School Unit 5 Superintendent Edward McDonough has resigned effective June 30, 2016.

In a letter dated March 21, McDonough wrote that he resigned “with deep regret” for “personal reasons that require my attention.”

“I greatly enjoyed and appreciated working with so many wonderful and dedicated folks,” McDonough wrote to RSU 5 Board Chairwoman Michelle Ritcheson. “I sincerely regret the inconvenience my departure may cause and I appreciate your understanding.”

“I had a great experience here, and I think it’s a great district,” McDonough told the Bangor Daily News on Friday, reiterating that he resigned for personal reasons.

RSU 5 includes the communities of Durham, Freeport and Pownal. On Friday voters in Durham were casting ballots to consider withdrawing from the district.

According to a job description posted on the RSU 5 website, the deadline for applications is April 28.

McDonough has served as superintendent for RSU 5 since August 2015. He was previously superintendent of schools in Portsmouth for six years, and prior to that was superintendent of the Wells-Ogunquit schools for seven years.

Donough offered to help recruit his replacement and to assist the new superintendent to allow a smooth transition.

Ritcheson of Durham did not immediately return a phone call on Friday.
