STONY BROOK, New York — Bobby Honeyman singled and later scored on a fielder’s choice grounder in the bottom of the seventh inning on Saturday afternoon, lifting Stony Brook University to a 2-1 victory in the second game of an America East baseball doubleheader against the University of Maine at Joe Nathan Field.
The Seawolves won the first game 11-0.
Sunday’s game was canceled because of a weather forecast calling for morning snow showers, temperatures around 40 and winds near 30 mph.
The offensive struggles continued on Saturday for UMaine (5-20, 0-5 AE), which has now scored only three runs in 46 innings of conference play this season.
The Black Bears ended a string of 22 consecutive scoreless innings in the first inning of the opener. Danny Casals led off with a triple to right-center and scored on a one-out sacrifice fly by Tyler Schwanz.
It was the only run they would get all afternoon.
Dylan Resk led the Seawolves with two singles. Starting pitcher Tyler Honahan surrendered two hits and one run with three strikeouts and three walks in 4⅓ innings. Tim Knesnik came on to work 2⅓ innings of two-hit ball with two strikeouts, then Aaron Pinto recorded the final out in the seventh to pick up the win.
Senior Logan Fullmer, who worked nine scoreless innings in last Sunday’s start against Binghamton, pitched six innings of six-hit ball against Stony Brook. He struck out five and walked one, allowing only a single unearned run.
Stony Brook equalized in the second inning. Casey Baker walked and Resk beat out a bunt single. The runners moved up on a passed ball, before Honeyman grounded out to the mound to score the run.
The Seawolves scored the game-winner in the seventh against reliever John Arel. Honeyman opened with a single to center field and advanced on Caputo’s bunt before reaching third on a wild pitch. Giles’s ground ball won it.
In the first game, Chad Lee and Teddy Rodliff teamed up on an eight-hit shutout as the Seawolves prevailed.
Lee (3-2) scattered four hits over the first six innings while striking out seven and walking two. Rodliff claimed his second save after limiting UMaine to four hits with six strikeouts and a walk over the last three innings.
Giles paced Stony Brook with two singles and two RBis, while David Real collected a triple, a double and a single. Caputo drove in three runs with a single and a sacrifice fly for the winners.
Colin Ridley and Brenden Geary each hit two singles for UMaine. Kevin Stypulkowski added a double.
Sophomore Justin Courtney of Bangor (1-3) took the loss. He gave up four hits and four runs with seven strikeouts and two walks in 6⅓ innings.
Stony Brook scored all the runs it would need in the sixth inning. Real hit a one-out triple and scored on an infield single by Giles.
Toby Handley was hit by a pitch, then Andruw Gazzola stroked a run-scoring single. Jack Parenty was walked intentionally, but Caputo grounded out to plate the third run.
Stony Brook scored five times in the seventh, aided by three walks, a wild pitch and an error, to put the game out of reach.
