BRUNSWICK, Maine — A man who jumped from the Merrymeeting Bridge onto Route 1 below has died.
Police and rescue personnel went to Route 1 about 3 p.m. Wednesday after someone jumped from the bridge — also known as the Route 196 overpass — onto the southbound lane of Route 1 below, Brunswick police Cmdr. Mark Waltz said at 3:10 p.m.
In a new release sent out later, Cmdr. Marc Hagan said police went to the bridge after receiving a report of a man standing on the roof of his vehicle on the northbound ramp to the bridge. When they arrived, they discovered the man had jumped onto Route 1. The man was pronounced dead at the scene by Brunswick rescue personnel.
Hagan said police are investigating what led to the incident.
Southbound traffic on Route 1 was rerouted onto the Merrymeeting Bridge and through Topsham.
