Ian Harvie, a Maine native considered the first female-to-male transgender comedian, will be honored Saturday by the organization EqualityMaine.

Harvie has built a nationwide following — through opening spots for famed comic Margaret Cho, his own headline events and a number of television appearances — but has continued to give back to the community. According to EqualityMaine, which plans to give Harvie its Great Pioneer Award during a Saturday ceremony, the comedian recently hosted a fundraiser for the Maine Transgender Network and mentored LGBT youth during a monthly gathering of local high school Gay-Straight-Trans Alliances.
